SANTA CLARITA — There are a bunch of losers working for the Hart high school district. In fact, employees there dumped a total of 3,275.5 pounds in three months. The biggest losers are at Rio Norte Junior High School, where the 10-member Team Aqua lost 269 pounds, 12.37 percent of the team’s starting weight. The feat won the group a $2,500 cash price to divide among members plus $2,500 for their school. Another prize went to Les Hershberger, a counselor at Arroyo Seco Junior High, who lost more than 24 percent of his starting body weight — the top loser in the district. Alison Schmidt, the school district’s nurse, is behind the Big Loser District Challenge, a contest she came up with before the winter holidays. While she expected 40 or 50 employees to sign up, 260 did, each contributing $20 toward the prize funds. “The concept was to encourage teachers and staff participants to lose weight, reduce health risk behaviors, lower stress and improve moral,” Schmidt said. Dividing the losers into teams seemed to help motivate individuals, she said. Team members walked together, ate better and supported one another — and weighed in every Monday to keep things honest. Schmidt now plans to hold another Big Loser Challenge after Labor Day to ready employees for the holidays.
