Macke Moves Into Drake Record Book In A 3-0 Win Over Chicago State

first_img DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake volleyball team cruised to a three set victory over visiting Chicago State Monday, Oct. 29. The game ended a three-match homestand where the Bulldogs were able to end with a non-conference victory after a tough stretch of Missouri Valley Conference competition.Drake (17-10) prevailed by set scores of 25-9, 25-7, 25-21 in the quick three-set victory. The Bulldogs were led by Cathryn Cheek (Coppell, Texas) who had 15 kills on 36 attempts for her ninth-straight match with double-figure kills. Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) registered nine kills on just 17 attempts giving her a .471 hitting percentage on the night.Drake jumped out to an early 10-5 lead to open the match forcing a Chicago State (8-20) timeout. The Bulldogs came out swinging and went on a 15-4 scoring run to end the set, 25-9. The Bulldogs did not make an attacking error and hit a blistering .579 to make for a hot start that would carry them through the remainder of the match.Kylee Macke had six digs in the first set which moved her into 10th all-time in digs in Drake volleyball history. She lead the Bulldog defense by picking up 19 digs in the match and now has 916 for her career, the ninth-most in program history. The Bulldogs cruised to a second set victory, 25-7. They registered 12 kills as a team provided by three kills each for Cheek, Plock and Callan Holmes (Lorena, Texas). Chicago State found some rhythm in the third set and by the media timeout, Drake held on to a three point lead. However, Chicago State scored three-straight points to event the score at 15, and from there it was a back-and-forth fight down the stretch. A kill from Gillian Gergen Janesville, Iowa) and a handful of Chicago State miscues shifted the momentum back to the Bulldogs as they were able to close out the final set, 25-21.The Bulldogs return to MVC play at week’s end when they head to Normal, Ill., to take on Illinois State (20-5, 12-1 MVC) Friday, Nov. 2. Drake will look to avenge its 3-1 loss to the Redbirds earlier in conference play.
