The new school year is underway and the Peermont Childrens Trust (PCT), one of Peermont Global’s flagship Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programmes, is once again busy giving less fortunate primary school learners new uniforms as part of its support of nine after school care centres in Ekurhuleni. The Trust, which is supported by Emperors Palace, is giving 760 learners the opportunity to go to school looking as bright as new buttons as they are being kitted out in new school outfits, receiving everything from new school shoes to school bags. The uniform initiative is part of the Trust’s involvement with the after care centres which are situated in Vosloorus, Tembisa, Katlehong, Thokoza and Kwa-Thema and provide a safe haven for vulnerable children, from 22 affiliated primary schools.Apart from the school uniforms the children receive afternoon meals, after school care in a controlled and supervised environment at these centres in the afternoon during the school terms and food parcels for the July and December holidays, all thanks to the Trust. The after school care programme was initiated by the Trust as a supplementary programme to the Government School Nutrition Programme and has assisted over 8500 learners since the PCT, formally known as the East Rand Childrens Trust, was started in 2005, at a cost of nearly R11-million.Speaking about the uniform handovers Trust Chairperson, Tshidi Madima said, “The confidence and self-esteem of all beneficiaries are boosted every year by the provision of these school uniforms and very importantly give each learner a sense of belong”.The nine after care centres based at Thembakazi Primary, Fortune Kunene, Jongimfundo Primary and Nageng Primary in Vosloorus, Welamlambo Primary in Tembisa, Reahile Primary in Katlehong, Khangezile in Kwa-Thema and Maphanzela and Umkhathaize Primary Schools in Thokoza are also financially assisted each year by the running of the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile. The above horse race annually brings 16 celebrities and 16 race horses together for the benefit of 16 worthy causes with the latter, which includes the after care centres, sharing R1-million after the race. Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest My eight-year old Doberman cross would be shocked to learn that I am praising his approach to life. Luke loves to eat, especially bread. He isn’t picky — any type bread or crackers or bakery product will do. As a result, we have Luke-proofed the kitchen, or attempted to. We purchased a bread box, but Luke figured out that was not in his best interest, so he knocked it off the cupboard and sent it packing. We used the microwave for storage of bread items, until Luke figured out how to open the door. (I could probably teach Luke to line dance, if I dangled bread in front of him.) Our current bread storage is the oven, but I have observed Luke studying that, so I know it is only a matter of time until he masters that handle.Several years ago, while he was left alone inside the house and unable to reach his desired carbohydrates, Luke attempted to bake his own bread. At least that is what it looked like happened. I returned from calf feeding to find a 120-pound black dog and the kitchen floor covered in flour. Luke just looked up at me with big innocent eyes, as if to say the flour just fell from the cupboard, and he was far more surprised than I was.Remember this approach if an environmental incident happens on your farm. I have practiced law long enough that I remember the good old days when ag lawyers prided themselves in not dealing with criminal prosecutions. Ag law was all about estate planning, business agreements and land acquisitions and the like. Court cases were civil, or maybe administrative, but agricultural concerns were rarely criminal. All of that changed with environmental laws and the zealous enforcement thereof. And the criminalization of agriculture continues. The folks prosecuting these cases do not acknowledge that even with the best of intentions, proper safeguards and state of the art methodology, that accidents can happen. To them, an environmental accident is a potential criminal prosecution. The instant that you discover an environmental concern on your property, call your lawyer. Request their presence on your property as you start building your defense in the event charges are pressed. Keep in mind that the state may have years to file charges, based on applicable law. The best time to create an effective defense against this possibility is immediately upon discovering a possible situation.Take many pictures. Document everything that you recall leading up to the discovery of the issue. Pull samples of your own. Write down everyone that appears on your farm to investigate the matter. And, of course, take immediate steps to correct the situation.Chances are, numerous governmental agencies with various alphabet acronyms will soon appear on the scene. They will also document everything they see, but their goals are not necessarily identical to yours. Of course, all parties involved want to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. But everyone present will have an agenda, and a farmer needs legal counsel to protect his rights and start building a defense based on precisely what happened and what steps the farmer did to remedy the problem.Do not assume that everyone that shows up in an official capacity will understand what has happened. Be aware that if the powers that be determine criminal charges should be brought it is very likely the farmer may end up paying for whatever agency is involved to create and document a criminal case against him.Obviously, it is important to cooperate with all agencies involved. Just do so in a manner that protects your interests. I can assure you all those responding to the emergency will be doing the same.Wisely dealing with an environmental spill is much like handling a vehicle accident. Remember the often-quoted advice to provide insurance information and remain quiet? Obviously, listen to advice of your attorney handling the situation. And keep in mind it is likely that anything you say during discovery and correction of the environmental issue will be ruled admissible in court as an exception to the hearsay rule, because it may be considered an admission. This is contrary to the way farmers and other honorable folks behave. No one understands this better than Kristian Bush. He is half of the country duo Sugarland. Remember the horrific accident that occurred on August 13, 2011 when a wind gust from an approaching severe thunderstorm hit the Indiana State Fair’s temporary roof structure causing it to collapse and kill 7 and injure 58? Bush told Rollingstone Magazine that he was ordered to be quiet even though he wanted to reach out to his injured fans and express his sorrow and sympathy over the accident. He said maintaining this silence was one of the most difficult things he has ever done. Unfortunately, what may feel right could just lead to legal liability. Specific details of the settlement with the families was not disclosed, but Sugarland and the other 17 defendants reportedly settled by paying damages in excess of $39 million. When Bush had to remain silent, he poured his energy into his music and recently released a new solo album, Southern Gravity. Here’s hoping that you never need any of this information. If an environmental issue arises, however, call your lawyer, document and correct that matter as quickly as possible. And when in doubt, look innocent and remain silent. It worked for Luke.
You can read more about the lenses and the rest of ZEISS’s NAB announcements on their website. What are you looking for in the new lenses? Let us know in the comments. Here is our quick hands-on review of ZEISS’s new CP.3 lenses and what you should expect. All images via PremiumBeat, Paperlyte and ZEISS.Here at PremiumBeat, we were fortunate to get an early look at ZEISS’s new CP.3 lenses before the recent announcement at NAB. The lenses, which we tested out in partnership with Paperlyte in Oak Cliff, Texas, gave us a quick glimpse into what theses new lenses have to offer. Here’s a behind-the-scenes photo of the lens test at Paperlyte’s studios. We were able to do a quick run-through to check out the lens at different T-stops and lighting setups while shooting on Paperlyte’s Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6k. Look out for some more in-depth reviews once the lenses hit the general public, but for a quick sneak peak, we tried to get a good understanding of what the new CP.3s have to offer and how they compare to the old model.Clean and CrispZEISS CP.3 50mm at 3.2 T-stop.One of the first things you notice when working with the new CP.3s is their crispness. Like the old offering, the new lenses are sharp! The image, as seen through the URSA Mini Pro 4.6, provides good, clean definition.Full and Consistent CoverageThe kit that we checked out included 18mm, 21mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm lenses. It offers full-frame coverage that consistently matches across lenses and previous generations. With the wide-open T-stops of T2.9 for 18mm-21mm and T2.1 for 25 up to 135mm, you can count on the best exposure compensations on set or in any environment. Plus, thanks to the interchangeable mount system, you can use them on a wide variety of cameras.Ease of UseLike past generations, the CP.3 lenses are lightweight and easy to manage. You can feel comfortable using them on gimbals, drones, SteadiCams, and other handheld setups. The sizes and weight remain consistent across the focal lengths. The CP.3 also offers the same high expectations for focus rotation smoothness, which makes it quick and easy to rack focus on a dime.Bonus: eXtended Data TechnologyNot to bury the lede, but some of the coolest and biggest differences between the CP.2 and CP.3 lenses are in the new eXtended Data Technology (XD), which premiered at NAB (not in our tests). The new XD technology offers information about the lens’s distortion and shading characteristics, monitored and shared in real-time.This means that with the ZEISS CP.3 XD on set, crew members can monitor lens settings in real-time, complete with pre-vis modified images and included search functions and data wrangling. In post, the XD data helps with everything, including fine-tuning, editing, color grading, visual effects, virtual and augmented reality, multi-cam live productions, and projection or 3-D imaging. While we don’t have exact numbers yet, a ZEISS representative confirmed that the price points for the CP.3 will be similar to the CP.2.The price of the CP.3 will be similar to CP.2 and the XD version will be a little bit more per lens. You can’t switch a normal CP.3 to a CP.3 XD, so customers would have to choose. Our recommendation is to consider the XD as it is future-proof and will have extended abilities beyond what is being introduced next week. Here’s a clip by ZEISS that shows the new CP.3 lenses in use on an ARRI Alexa Mini.

Salve: Power struggleOf all the sports organisations in this country, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is possibly the richest. Last fortnight, however, the riches had created a problem: the simple matter of a cheque for Rs 35 lakh – the proceeds of the Delhi Test between India and the MCC last year – which should have gone to the BCCI account in Madras, but instead went into a fresh fixed deposit account in Bombay.Over half-a-dozen of the 28 BCCI members asked for details of the cheque’s curious progress. Jagmohan Dalmiya, honorary secretary of the Bengal Cricket Association, wrote to M.A. Chidambaram, BCCI treasurer, asking if any board official or working committee member had approved the opening of the account for such a huge amount – according to BCCI rules no new bank account can be opened without the board’s approval. The Delhi Test was handled by a special committee appointed by the BCCI, because the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) had been superseded. BCCI President S.K. Wankhede headed the committee, I.S. Bindra, president of the Punjab Cricket Association was convenor and P.M. Rungta of Rajasthan was treasurer. As there was no permanent body in Delhi to look after the record profit of Rs 35 lakh, it was resolved that the money would be transferred to the BCCI’S account in Madras. According to Bindra, he along with Rungta wrote a cheque for Rs 35 lakh on February 5, 1982 in favour of the BCCI.advertisementBut instead of handing the cheque to Chidambaram, Rungta inexplicably withdrew the money from the Tolstoy Marg branch of the New Bank of India and converted it into a demand draft – No 434072/78/82 dated February 6, 1982 – drawn on the bank’s Bombay branch – Bindra was not in on this. In a letter to the bank, Rungta wrote: “Please issue a demand draft in the name of Board of Control for Cricket in India payable at Bombay.” On the same day, as it happened, an account was opened in the Banque Nationale de Paris and a fixed deposit of Rs 35 lakh for one year was made in the name of the BCCI. Chidambaram received a fixed deposit receipt from Rungta, instead of a cheque.Disputed Matters: The matter was first raised at the working committee meeting on April 1, 1982. Some pointed questions remained unanswered: why Rungta converted the cheque into a draft on his own; why a foreign bank was preferred, especially when the rate of interest – 7.5 per cent – is the same as that of Indian banks; who endorsed the account papers as only the BCCI president and/or treasurer can operate an account and that too after a BCCI resolution; and how the bank opened an account in the name of an organisation without asking for the resolution and the memorandum of association. The group that has talked the most about Rungta’s initiative is the “anti-Bombay group’, and consists mostly of senior government officials like Bindra, Phalgum Matilal, a joint director in the Railway Ministry, Kamlesh Sharma, a joint secretary in the Union Home Ministry and S.K. Kakkar, a senior Chandigarh administration official. They are powerfully backed by Minister of State for Information N.K.P. Salve, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and Kamal Nath, the powerful MP who dislodged K.K. Mehra and his friends from the DDCA. Kakkar says that “there is ample scope for smelling a rat” and feels that the bank “might have used the cash for sanctioning loans to various firms” in the wake of the credit squeeze. In the August 16-17 meeting of the BCCI in Bombay, this group demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation investigate the matter and that the account be closed. But Rungta was not present and a decision was postponed. For his part, Rungta refutes the allegation that there was anything wrong in opening the account.Said he: “Bindra signed a cheque and gave it to me to be handed over to the treasurer of the board. It is also correct that I handed over the demand draft receipt to Chidambaram.” He also claimed that the new account was opened in consultation with the treasurer and the president. But both Chidambaram and Wankhede, when asked in the board meeting, did not accept that they knew about it earlier.Financial Problems: ‘Irregularities’ in financial procedures have occurred earlier. Dalmiya had pointed out 54 errors in the audited accounts for 1980-81. The general body meeting in Bangalore on September 28, 1981, took note of his objections which included: glaring discrepancies in the cash and bank balances in accounts presented by the treasurer to the BCCI working committee on August 3, 1980 and figures given out at the Bangalore meeting; Rs 26 lakh expenditure on the Golden Jubilee Test between India and England at Bombay when only Rs 11 lakh was approved; unexplained expenditure of Rs 2 lakh in foreign exchange in England during the 1979 tour; and investment of nearly Rs 1 crore in various private companies by the BCCI investment committee without the approval of the BCCI board or working committee.advertisementThis last provoked quite a furore at two meetings of the board. According to the statement of accounts for 1980-81, the private companies so favoured are Tata Oil Mills (Rs 10 lakh), Mahindra and Mahindra (Rs 25 lakh), Bayer India Ltd (Rs 15 lakh), Standard Oil Mills (Rs 15 lakh) and ITC Ltd (Rs 25 lakh). The money came from nationalised banks by prematurely cancelling fixed deposits, and board officials accepted that the board or the working committee did not authorise the withdrawal and that the terms and the conditions were not disclosed earlier. Wankhede and others claimed, however, that no BCCI office-bearer was connected with any of the companies. Only after Dalmiya persisted was an eight-member inquiry committee, headed by Wankhede, appointed to look into these allegations: the final report is still to come even after a year.Things are likely to come to a head on September 26, 1982, at the elections for the office-bearers. The ‘anti-Bombay group’ led by Bindra is determined to oust Wankhede and his men and they seem to have numbers on their side: at a recent meeting of their group 16 of the BCCI’s 28 members were present. They have reportedly decided to field Salve for the president’s post. Says Matilal: “Ours is a democratic fight. We don’t want politics and money to spoil Indian cricket; we want to cleanse the BCCI of unscrupulous elements.” A pitched battle is clearly in the offing.
